An Emotional Plea to Humankind

So I am one of those people that likes to keep her opinions to herself for the simple fact that I don't like to upset people or be upset. (Unless it's you Alex, then its game on 😃) But I have to get this out. Even if few people read it.

With the election being only days away and the issue going on at Standing Rock, there have been multiple posts about each of these events. What I am having an issue with is the comments left on all these different posts. With people on both sides of all events, sometimes people are going to disagree with each other. I enjoy seeing the difference on opinions especially if it's an issue that I don't know much about. What I don't enjoy is the bashing of each other coming from both sides.

As an example, I was just reading some comments about the Dakota pipeline. Most being against but a few being for. While I don't know much about this issue, I did learn enough from this single post to form an early opinion. As I continued reading, an opposing opinion comment received over 100 replies. While I did not understand or agree with this woman's statement, I agreed even less with the "intelligent replies". Not because they were wrong, but because they were using language that felt intimidating instead of helpful. Wording like "you're the problem" and "shut up" and "stop being so stupid", does not help your argument.

Maybe it's the fact that I'm a history person but I like facts. And the more calmly you present your argument, the more likely I am to agree with you. But this does not just apply to the Pipeline. It doesn't matter if you're a Trump fan, a Clinton supporter, a Bernie bro (just for you Huston!), a Johnson comrade, or like me, your pick went to the dark side months ago. Someone has to win, let's not tear each other apart to prove that one of us is right. We all have to live in this country after November 8th. Especially our children who will inherit this world after us.

One last thought, although the zombie apocalypse is unlikely to happen, TJ had a point with The Walking Dead. The show had become scary, not because of the zombies, but because the people like Negan are who will survive a real life apocalypse. And I have seen many posts saying that this election is leading to just such a world. My response is that if we all looked at ourselves and tried to be decent human beings, maybe there would be more Glenns than Negans. But then I'm an optimist. Let's start with our Facebook comments.

Be kind to each other.

Feel free to comment on here! But be warned, if you aren't following my advice about being kind and only stating facts or calm opinions, I will call you out on it. Nicely :)

  1. First of all, you have a blog!? How cool!! I want one! Secondly, we NEED more Glenn's in this world!! I keep finding out just how much alike you and I really are! It BLOWS my mind that people can humiliate, belittle, and deceit others without the slightest care! We're all just out here trying to live. Let people live!!! If it's not negatively impacting me or mine, do you, boo! ❤
